EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Miss Farida Zulficar, later to become Queen Farida of Egypt, is seen radiantly smiling as she prepares for her engagement to King Farouk I of Egypt. Born as Sasi Naz, which means Pure Rose in Persian, Farida's name was changed to Unique, as per the Egyptian tradition that the Queen must bear a purely Egyptian name upon her marriage to the monarch. The year was 1945, and the young Egyptian princess-to-be, dressed in an elegant Western-style gown, is captured in this timeless moment of joy and anticipation. Her engagement to King Farouk, who was 20 years her senior, was a significant event in Egyptian history, as she was the first Egyptian queen to be crowned in over 2,000 years. Farida's engagement to the monarch came after a whirlwind romance, during which she captivated the heart of the king with her beauty, intelligence, and charisma. The couple's engagement was met with widespread public approval, and Farida quickly became a beloved figure in Egyptian society. Despite the initial joy and promise of their union, the marriage was fraught with challenges and controversies. Farida's modernizing influence on the Egyptian court and her efforts to promote women's rights and education were met with resistance, and her relationship with the king was marked by scandal and infidelity. Nevertheless, Farida remained a symbol of hope and progress during her time as queen, and her legacy continues to inspire Egyptians to this day. This photograph captures a moment of happiness and promise in the life of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on Egyptian history.
