EDITORS COMMENTS
"Millard Fillmore: A Pivotal President in American History This image captures Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States of America, in a formal portrait taken during his tenure from 1850 to 1853. Born on January 7, 1800, in Summerhill, New York, Fillmore rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent figure in American politics. Before his presidency, Fillmore served as the 13th Governor of New York and the 27th Vice President under Zachary Taylor. He assumed the presidency upon Taylor's sudden death in 1850, making him the last president to ascend to the office in this manner. Fillmore's presidency was marked by significant events, including the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, which intensified tensions between the North and South over the issue of slavery. This controversial legislation required citizens to assist in the capture and return of escaped slaves, sparking widespread protests and fueling the growing divide between the two regions. Despite these challenges, Fillmore also made important strides during his presidency. He signed the Treaty of Wadsworth, which expanded American territory by adding over 100,000 square miles to the United States. Additionally, he appointed the first chief justice of the Supreme Court from outside the judiciary, Robert C. Grier. This photograph, taken in 1854, offers a glimpse into the life of a pivotal figure in American history. Millard Fillmore's presidency marked a turning point in the nation's story, as it set the stage for the Civil War and the eventual abolition of slavery. This image is a testament to Fillmore's significant contributions to the United States during a time of great turmoil and change." Mary Evans Picture Library / Mary Evans Prints Online.
