EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic and sophisticated presence of Michael Arlen, the renowned British writer and journalist, born as Dikran Kouyoumdjian in Bulgaria in 1895. Arlen's Armenian parents instilled in him a deep appreciation for his cultural heritage, but it was in England that he would make a name for himself as a literary figure. Born in 1895 in Bulgaria, Arlen was the son of Armenian parents. Despite his humble beginnings, he was educated in England and went on to naturalize as a British citizen in 1922. Arlen's writing career began in earnest in the 1920s, and he quickly gained a reputation for his witty and incisive prose. In the 1930s and 1940s, Arlen became a regular contributor to Vanity Fair and Vogue, where he wrote about high society and the jet set. His essays and short stories were known for their sharp observations and biting wit, earning him a loyal following and critical acclaim. Arlen's most famous work, however, was his novel "Passage to Ararat," published in 1928. The novel, which draws on Arlen's own experiences growing up in an Armenian family, is a poignant and powerful exploration of identity, culture, and the human condition. It remains a classic of modern literature and a testament to Arlen's enduring talent. In this photograph, taken in 1956, Arlen exudes an air of confidence and intelligence, with a hint of mischief in his eyes. The photograph is a fitting representation of the complex and multifaceted man behind the words, a man who continues to captivate and inspire readers around the world.
