EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of historical significance when Matthias, the Austrian archduke, was crowned Holy Roman Emperor at Frankfurt on February 21, 1612. The Imperial crown, a symbol of the emperor's secular and spiritual authority, is being placed on Matthias' head by the Archbishop of Mainz, Albrecht von Wallenstein. Surrounded by a sea of dignitaries, Matthias sits regally on his throne, his expression conveying a sense of determination and resolve. The Imperial regalia, including the Imperial scepter and orb, are prominently displayed on the table before him. Matthias' election to the Imperial throne was a pivotal event in German history. He succeeded Emperor Rudolph II, who had been unable to govern effectively due to his eccentricities and preoccupation with alchemy. Matthias, a capable and experienced ruler, was chosen to restore order and stability to the Holy Roman Empire. His reign marked the beginning of the House of Habsburg's dominance in Europe, which would last for over three centuries. The city of Frankfurt, the site of Matthias' election, was an appropriate location for this historic event. It was the traditional venue for the Imperial elections, and its location at the crossroads of major trade routes made it a hub of commerce and culture. The image of Matthias' coronation in Frankfurt serves as a reminder of the city's rich history and its role as a center of political and cultural power in Europe during the early modern period.
