EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Tudor, also known as Mary I or Mary I of England, is depicted in this evocative portrait holding a crucifix with a solemn and determined expression. Born in Greenwich Palace on February 18, 1516, Mary was the only surviving child of King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. When her father remarried and had a son, Edward, Mary was set aside as the heir to the throne. However, upon Henry's death in 1553, Mary seized the opportunity to claim the throne for herself, despite her half-sister Elizabeth's claims. Mary's reign, which lasted from 1553 to 1558, was marked by her staunchly Catholic beliefs and her efforts to restore England to the Roman Catholic faith. This portrait, created during Mary's reign, showcases her piety and devotion to her faith. Mary's elaborate gown, adorned with intricate embroidery and rich fabrics, underscores her regal status. The crucifix she holds in her hands is a symbol of her deep faith and her commitment to leading England as a devout Catholic monarch. Mary's reign was not without controversy, however. Her marriage to King Philip II of Spain raised concerns among the English people, and her persecution of Protestants led to widespread unrest. Despite these challenges, Mary remained steadfast in her beliefs and her determination to restore Catholicism to England. This portrait offers a glimpse into the complex and intriguing life of Mary Tudor, a monarch whose reign was marked by religious turmoil and political upheaval. The crucifix she holds serves as a reminder of her unwavering faith and her commitment to leading her people as a devout Catholic queen.
