EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie-Louise of Austria (1791-1847), the second empress of Napoleon I, is depicted in this striking image as she stands resolute, wearing the Imperial Crown of France and clutching at the furniture for support. Born as Archduchess Marie-Louise Amalie of Austria, she was the youngest daughter of Emperor Leopold II and Empress Maria Ludovica of Austria. In 1810, at the age of 18, Marie-Louise was married to Napoleon Bonaparte, the French Emperor, in a grand ceremony held in the Palace of Fontainebleau. The marriage was a strategic move on Napoleon's part, as he sought to secure the support of the powerful Hapsburg dynasty. However, the union was not a happy one, and Marie-Louise is said to have despised her husband. This image, taken from around 1812, captures a moment of tension and unease. Marie-Louise's expression is one of determination and resolve, as she clings to the furniture for support, perhaps indicating her unease at the political and personal upheaval of the time. Despite the challenges of her marriage, Marie-Louise played an important role in European history. She gave birth to Napoleon's only legitimate heir, the future King of Rome, in 1811. After Napoleon's defeat in 1814, Marie-Louise and her son were exiled to Austria, where she lived out the rest of her days. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the complex and tumultuous world of imperial Europe in the early 19th century.
