EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century illustration showcases two remarkable creatures of the North American Atlantic coast: the Black Margate fish (Anisotremus surinamensis) atop and the Sea Sparrow-hawk (Accipiter cooperii) below. The Black Margate, also known as the Florida Grunt or Mark, is a popular bony fish belonging to the Haemulidae family and the Perciformes order. With its vibrant colors and distinctive markings, this bottom-dwelling fish is a common sight in the shallow waters of the Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico. The Sea Sparrow-hawk, on the other hand, is a bird of prey from the Accipitridae family and the Accipitriformes order. Also known as the Osprey or Fish Hawk, this bird is a versatile hunter that can be found throughout North America, from the Arctic regions to the Caribbean. With its sharp talons and hooked beak, the Sea Sparrow-hawk is an expert at catching fish and other aquatic prey, making it an essential part of the coastal ecosystem. The illustration is a testament to the intricate detail and beauty of the natural world, captured by the skilled hand of the renowned English naturalist, Mark Catesby. Catesby's work, which includes over 200 plates, is considered a seminal contribution to the study of North American natural history. This particular illustration, with its striking contrast between the colorful Margate fish and the graceful Sea Sparrow-hawk, offers a captivating glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the North Atlantic coast during the 18th century.
