The historical context of this event is significant, as Fitzgerald was one of the most powerful lords in Ireland and his defection marked a turning point in the English conquest of the island. The year was 1534, and Henry VIII was seeking to assert his authority over Ireland, which had long been governed by the powerful Fitzgerald family. Tensions had been building for some time, with Fitzgerald resisting English attempts to impose new taxes and religious reforms.
