EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraved portrait captures the likeness of Lord George Bentinck, a prominent English politician of the 19th century. Born on September 30, 1802, Bentinck was the eldest son of the 3rd Duke of Portland and Lady Catherine Townshend. He entered politics as the Member of Parliament for Nottingham in 1826, representing the Tory party. Bentinck's political career was marked by his strong opposition to the Reform Bill of 1832, which aimed to expand the electorate and redistrict constituencies. He believed that the bill would lead to instability and chaos, and his speeches against it were passionate and eloquent. Despite his efforts, the bill was eventually passed, and Bentinck resigned from Parliament in protest. In the following years, Bentinck continued to be active in politics, serving as the Postmaster General in Lord Derby's government from 1852 to 1854. He was also known for his support of the Irish Church and his opposition to the abolition of the Corn Laws. Tragically, Bentinck's life was cut short when he died on September 7, 1848, at the age of 45. The cause of his death is unclear, but some sources suggest that he may have succumbed to a long-standing illness. This portrait, created around the time of his death, serves as a poignant reminder of a man who dedicated his life to shaping the political landscape of his time. The image is a beautiful example of 19th-century engraving, with intricate details that bring Bentinck's features to life. The artist has captured the intensity of his gaze and the seriousness of his expression, making for a striking and memorable portrait.
