EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures St Johns Wood fire station in Adelaide Road, London, as it appeared in the early 1900s. Originally built for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) in 1871, the fire station became the responsibility of the London County Council (LCC) in 1889, marking the year that the MFB was renamed the London Fire Brigade (LFB). The Edwardian-era building, with its distinctive red brick facade and ornate detailing, housed several fire appliances and bays, each capable of accommodating a fire engine and its team. The shed-like structure, with its large sliding doors, allowed for quick and efficient deployment of the fire engines. The London Fire Brigade served the community from this station until its closure in 1915. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the rich history of firefighting in London during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
