Metal Prints From Mary Evans Picture Library

LCC-LFB Brigade HQ, Southwark SE1

Built for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, after the Watling Street headquarters building became too small for the growing fire service, this building in Southwark Bridge Road SE1 remained the Brigades headquarters until relocation to the new Lambeth site on the Albert Embankment in 1937. The fire station to the left of the square tower was added in 1911. The arched frontage with the spired tower was demolished in the late 1960s by the Greater London Council

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic LCC-LFB Brigade Headquarters building located in Southwark Bridge Road, SE1. Constructed for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in the early 1920s, this architectural masterpiece served as the brigade's headquarters until their relocation to the new Lambeth site on the Albert Embankment in 1937. The building's grand design, featuring a square tower and arched frontage with a spired tower, was a testament to the growing importance and sophistication of the London Fire Brigade. The fire station to the left of the tower was added in 1911, further expanding the capabilities of the brigade. However, the passage of time took its toll on this historic structure. In the late 1960s, the Greater London Council made the difficult decision to demolish the arched frontage and spired tower, marking the end of an era for this iconic building. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of firefighting in London during the 1920s, a time when the Metropolitan Fire Brigade was evolving to meet the needs of a growing city. The LCC-LFB Brigade Headquarters in Southwark Bridge Road remains an important piece of London's firefighting history, despite its current absence.
