EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic and witty French journalist and writer, Lon Charles Bienvenu, also known by his pen name Touchatout. Born in 1835, Bienvenu was a prominent figure in French literary and political circles during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With a keen eye for satire and a biting wit, he used his pen to skewer the political and social elite of his time. Bienvenu's career as a journalist began in the 1850s, and he quickly gained a reputation for his incisive commentary on current events. He was a regular contributor to several major French newspapers and magazines, including Le Figaro and Le Rire. His satirical sketches and caricatures, which often targeted the powerful and influential, were both popular and controversial. Despite the risks involved in criticizing the ruling classes, Bienvenu's work was widely read and admired. He was known for his ability to capture the essence of French society and its foibles, and his insights were often prescient. One of his most famous works, "La Vie Parisienne," was published in 1863 and remains a classic of French literature. Bienvenu's pen name, Touchatout, was derived from the French phrase "toucher tout," which means "to touch everything." This aptly described his wide-ranging interests and his ability to comment on a diverse range of topics. He was a true polymath, with a deep knowledge of literature, politics, art, and culture. This photograph, taken in the late 1800s, captures Bienvenu in the prime of his career. With a pen in hand and a mischievous smile on his face, he seems poised to create another biting satire or insightful commentary. Today, Bienvenu is remembered as a master of French journalism and a pioneer of satire. His work continues to inspire and entertain, and his legacy as a witty and incisive observer of French life endures.
