EDITORS COMMENTS
November 1871: The Historic Encounter of Dr. Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley at Ujiji, Tanganyika, Africa This evocative photograph captures the moment of discovery and reunion between the legendary Scottish explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, and the American journalist Henry Morton Stanley, at Ujiji, Tanganyika, Africa, on November 10, 1871. The image, taken from the extensive Mary Evans Picture Library collection, is a poignant reminder of one of the most significant events in the annals of exploration history. Dr. Livingstone, a pioneering missionary and explorer, had been missing for several years, having ventured deep into the heart of Africa in search of the source of the Nile. Stanley, sent by the New York Herald to locate the missing explorer, had arrived at Ujiji on a mission to find Livingstone and bring news of his discovery back to the world. The photograph, taken shortly after their encounter, shows a tired but elated Stanley, standing before the famed explorer, who is seated on a rock with a map spread out before him. The caption, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" is a famous quote from Stanley, who, upon finding Livingstone, greeted him with those now-iconic words. This historic moment marked the end of Livingstone's long and arduous journey and brought renewed attention to the exploration of Africa. The encounter between these two great men stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the relentless pursuit of knowledge and discovery. The photograph, with its rich historical significance, is a must-have for any collection focusing on exploration, African history, or the lives of these two remarkable figures. This image, taken over a century ago, continues to inspire and captivate audiences, reminding us of the incredible stories that lie at the heart of human history.
