This striking image captures the legendary moment when the Spanish mystic and Franciscan friar, San Pedro de Alcantara (1506-1562), was reportedly levitated towards a crucifix during a religious ecstasy in the 16th century. San Pedro, born in Andalusia, Spain, was known for his deep devotion to the Catholic faith and his extraordinary spiritual experiences. The event took place in the Church of San Francisco in Seville, circa 1560. According to witnesses, San Pedro was in the midst of a fervent prayer when he was suddenly lifted off the ground and suspended in the air, hovering inches away from the crucifix. The incident was witnessed by numerous people, including other friars and members of the local community, and was reported to the church authorities. Despite skepticism from some, the incident gained widespread fame and San Pedro was revered as a saintly figure.
