EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, published in La Ilustración Iberica in 1888, commemorates the victory of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I (1640-1705) over the Turks. Leopold I, who was also the Archduke of Austria, King of Hungary and Croatia, and King of Bohemia, is depicted in regal attire, seated on his throne and holding a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other. The globe symbolizes his dominion over various territories, while the victory over the Turks is signified by the Turkish flag at his feet. The background of the image is filled with scenes of the battle, with Austrian soldiers triumphantly raising their flags and Turkish soldiers in defeat. The caption at the bottom reads "Germania Triumphans," which translates to "Germany Triumphant," emphasizing the significance of this victory in the context of European history. Leopold I's reign marked the height of the House of Habsburg's power in Europe. He played a crucial role in the Thirty Years' War and was instrumental in the expansion of the Habsburg territories. However, his most notable achievement was the defeat of the Turks at the Battle of Vienna in 1683, which marked the end of the Ottoman threat to Central Europe. This engraving is a testament to Leopold I's military prowess and his role in European history. The use of color adds to the visual impact of the image, making it a striking representation of the modern age monarch and his victories.
