EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the daring low-flying tactics employed by the Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancaster bombers during the Second World War raids on Le Creusot Schneider Works on 17 October and Milan on 24 October in 1942. In this image, the Lancasters are seen skillfully hedge-hopping, or skimming the treetops and ground, to evade enemy defenses and anti-aircraft fire. The close formation of these heavy bombers presented a significant challenge to the Axis ground defenses and fighter planes, as they made it difficult for the enemy to accurately target the British aircraft. The low-flying tactics were a new and effective strategy employed by the RAF to disrupt industrial production and military targets in enemy territory. The difficulties faced by the enemy in countering these tactics are evident in the chaos and destruction depicted in the background of this photograph. The courage and skill of the RAF pilots during these raids played a crucial role in turning the tide of the war in favor of the Allies. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the RAF during the Second World War.
