EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant portrait captures Lady Catherine Margaret Petre, formerly Lady Catherine Margaret Boscawen, in the year 1918, following the tragic loss of her husband, Lionel George Carroll, 16th Baron Petre. Born on November 3, 1890, Lionel was the son of the 15th Baron and Julia Mary Cavendish-Taylor. He served valiantly in the British Army during World War I, rising to the rank of Captain in the Coldstream Guards. In the late spring of 1915, he was wounded near Arras. Despite being repatriated to England, he succumbed to his injuries in September of that year, leaving behind two young children, one of whom was born posthumously. Lady Petre, a woman of great resilience and determination, went on to remarry and become Lady Rasch. However, it was her dedication to the restoration of the Petre family seat, Ingatestone Hall, in Essex, that would become her most enduring legacy. This grand estate, steeped in history, had been in the Petre family for over 500 years and required extensive renovations after the ravages of war. Lady Petre's tireless efforts brought new life to this historic treasure, ensuring that it would continue to stand as a testament to the rich history of the Petre family and the upper classes during the tumultuous period of the early 20th century.
