EDITORS COMMENTS
King Henry III of France, also known as Henry of Valois, ruled as King of France from 1574 until his assassination in 1589. In this stunning handcolored illustration from Georges Duplessis' "Historical Costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries," published in Paris in 1867, we see the monarch wearing the distinctive blue sash of the Order of Saint Esprit. The Order, established in 1578 by Henry II of France, was the highest order of chivalry in the Kingdom of France. Henry III is depicted wearing a richly decorated robe, adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery, as was the fashion of the late 16th century. The collar of the Order of Saint Esprit is visible around his neck, with its blue ribbon draped over his left shoulder and across his chest. The sash of the order is worn diagonally across his body, from his right shoulder to his left hip. The illustration is based on a painting in the Louvre Museum and was produced through the process of lithography, with handcoloring added by the artist E. Lechevallier-Chevignard. The intricate details of the king's costume are beautifully rendered, from the folds of his robe to the ornate decorations on his hat and shoes. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French court during the late Renaissance period.
