EDITORS COMMENTS
Ferdinand VI of Spain, also known as Fernando VI, ruled as King of Spain from 1746 until his death in 1759. Born in Naples in 1713, Ferdinand was a member of the Bourbon dynasty and succeeded his mother, Elisabeth Farnese, upon her death. This engraving from the 18th century captures a moment in the royal court of Ferdinand and his wife, Barbara of Braganza. Barbara, born in Portugal in 1711, was the daughter of John V of Portugal and his second wife, Maria Anna of Austria. She married Ferdinand in 1729, and their union produced no children. The couple's court was known for its intellectual pursuits, with a particular focus on music, literature, and science. In this image, Ferdinand and Barbara are depicted in a grand interior, surrounded by members of their court. Ferdinand, dressed in the robes of a king, sits on a throne, while Barbara stands beside him, her hands folded in front of her. The couple's learned courtiers, dressed in the latest fashion of the day, look on with interest and admiration. Ferdinand was known for his love of learning and his patronage of the arts. He was an accomplished musician and a lover of literature, and his court was a center of intellectual activity in Europe during the modern age. This engraving offers a glimpse into the world of the learned monarch and his wife, a world of culture, refinement, and intellectual pursuits.
