This evocative print captures the solemn and contemplative gaze of Cardinal Josef Saenz d Aguirra, a prominent Spanish prelate of the late 17th century. Born in 1630 in the Kingdom of Navarre, Saenz d Aguirra rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church to become a trusted advisor to King Charles II of Spain. In 1684, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Granada and was later elevated to the rank of cardinal in 1686. The image of Saenz d Aguirra, dressed in the rich robes and ermine-trimmed cape of his ecclesiastical office, conveys a sense of gravity and wisdom.
