EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken in 1889, the notorious American outlaw John Younger poses defiantly for the camera. Younger, a member of the infamous James-Younger gang, was a notoriously dangerous and elusive bandit who made a living by robbing trains and banks during the late 19th century. Born in Missouri in 1853, Younger grew up in a family of farmers and laborers. However, by the age of 16, he had already turned to a life of crime, joining up with the James-Younger gang, which was led by the notorious Jesse James and his brother Frank. The gang was known for its daring train robberies and bank heists, and they were responsible for the deaths of several law enforcement officers and civilians. Despite the danger and violence that surrounded him, Younger seemed to relish his role as an outlaw. In this photograph, he wears a confident expression, his eyes meeting the camera with a steely gaze. His clothing, a worn and faded bandana and a long, unbuttoned coat, speaks to his life on the run. Younger's criminal career came to an end in 1874, when he was captured following a botched bank robbery in Missouri. He was sentenced to life in prison, but managed to escape several times before finally being recaptured in 1895. He spent the rest of his life in various prisons and penitentiaries, dying in the Missouri State Penitentiary in 1956. Despite his criminal past, Younger remains a fascinating figure in American history, a symbol of the wild and lawless frontier days. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life of a notorious outlaw, a man who defied the law and lived by his own rules.
