EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the revered figure of Reverend John Jortin (1698-1770), a prominent English churchman, vicar of Kensington, and esteemed historian. The photograph, taken around 1770, depicts Jortin in his ecclesiastical robes, his serious expression and piercing gaze conveying a deep sense of wisdom and devotion. Born in London in 1698, Jortin was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and ordained a deacon in the Church of England in 1724. He served as a curate in various parishes before being appointed as the vicar of Kensington in 1741, a position he held for over three decades. Jortin's scholarly pursuits extended beyond his pastoral duties, and he became a respected historian, publishing numerous works on the history of the English Church. His most notable publications include "A History of the Church of England from the Reformation to the Revolution" (1755) and "A History of the Church of England from the Revolution to the Present Time" (1760). These works provided valuable insights into the political and religious history of England during the tumultuous 16th and 17th centuries. Jortin's contributions to the Church and to historical scholarship were widely recognized during his lifetime, and he was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1754. His legacy continues to be celebrated, and his works remain essential resources for scholars of English church history. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of an influential figure in English religious and intellectual history, capturing both his spiritual and scholarly pursuits. The image serves as a testament to Jortin's enduring impact on the Church and on the study of English church history.
