EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "JOHN HANNING SPEKE (1827-1864) Traveller in Africa," is a striking image of the English explorer, John Hanning Speke, as he is often remembered: bearded, intrepid, and holding a gun. The photograph was taken around 1864, during the height of Speke's African explorations. Speke, born in 1827, was a British explorer, soldier, and author, best known for his role in the discovery of Lake Victoria, which he believed to be the source of the Nile River. Speke's journey to Africa began in 1852 when he joined the East Africa Company as a clerk. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a trader and then a soldier, eventually leading expeditions into the interior of Africa. In this photograph, Speke is shown dressed for the African terrain, wearing a long-sleeved shirt, trousers, and a wide-brimmed hat. He holds a gun in his right hand, a necessary tool for protection against the various dangers of the African wilderness. Speke's beard, which became a distinguishing feature of his later years, is also evident in this image. The photograph was taken by an unknown photographer, but it is believed to have been taken during Speke's second expedition to Africa, which took place between 1857 and 1860. During this expedition, Speke and his companion, Richard Francis Burton, explored the Great Lakes region of East Africa and made significant discoveries regarding the geography of the area. Speke's explorations were groundbreaking, and his discoveries helped to expand European knowledge of Africa. Tragically, Speke's life was cut short when he was killed in a hunting accident in 1864, at the age of 37. Today, he is remembered as a brave and intrepid explorer who opened up new frontiers of knowledge and understanding about the African continent.
