Born in Marseille, Falguiere studied under the renowned French sculptor, Antoine-Louis Barye, and later became a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Falguiere's artistic style was characterized by his mastery of the human form and his ability to imbue his sculptures with a sense of movement and emotion. He is best known for his public monuments, including "The Defender of the Rue des Fossés-Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois," which depicts a Parisian militiaman defending the city during the Franco-Prussian War. He was a member of the prestigious French Academy of Fine Arts and was awarded numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Legion of Honor.
