EDITORS COMMENTS
December 7, 1941: A Day of Infamy at Pearl Harbor This historic photograph captures the aftermath of the Japanese surprise attack on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The date, December 7, 1941, would go down in history as a day of infamy, as the unprovoked raid marked the entry of the United States into World War II. In this image, smoke rises from the wreckage of the USS Arizona, which was hit by a bomb during the attack and sank later that day. The USS Nevada, visible in the foreground, was hit by two bombs and a torpedo but was eventually repaired and returned to service. The destruction wrought by the Japanese forces was extensive, with eight U.S. battleships and six destroyers damaged or destroyed, and over 2,400 Americans killed or wounded. The photograph is from the Illustrated London News (ILN), one of the most influential and widely circulated weekly news magazines of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The ILN's coverage of the attack on Pearl Harbor was extensive, with several photographs and articles published in the weeks following the event. This particular photograph, with its dramatic composition and poignant subject matter, is a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of the raid and the beginning of the United States' involvement in World War II. The historical significance of this photograph is immeasurable, as it captures a pivotal moment in world history and provides a visual record of the events that shaped the course of the war and the world as we know it today. This image is a valuable addition to any collection of historical photographs or those interested in military history, World War II, or the history of the United States.
