EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the devastating aftermath of the bombardment of Izmir, Turkey, in March 1915, during the First World War. The city, then known as Smyrna, was a major port and cultural center in the Ottoman Empire. In response to the Ottoman Empire's entry into the war on the side of the Central Powers, the Allied forces, led by the British, launched a naval bombardment on the city. The photo was taken just 24 hours after the bombardment, revealing the extensive damage inflicted upon the city. The ruins of buildings and debris scattered throughout the frame serve as a stark reminder of the destruction wrought upon Izmir and its inhabitants. The smoke rising from the remains of the city adds to the sense of chaos and devastation. The campaign, known as the Battle of Smyrna, was a turning point in the Eastern Front of the First World War. The bombardment resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians and the displacement of hundreds of thousands more. The city would remain under Allied occupation until the end of the war. This photo provides a poignant glimpse into the past, offering a visual representation of the historical events that shaped the course of the First World War and the modern history of Turkey.
