EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the ruins of the Chateau of Sir Henry Bulwer, also known as the Bulwer House or the Bulwer Pavilion, located on Yassiada Island in Istanbul, Turkey. The island, also referred to as the Island of Plate, is part of the Municipality of Adalar in the Marmara Sea. The Chateau was once the residence of Sir Henry Bulwer, 1st Baron Dalling and Bulwer (1801-1872), who served as the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1858 to 1868, succeeding Lord Stratford de Redcliffe. The grand edifice, with its towering structures and intricate details, once stood as a symbol of British influence and power during the Ottoman Empire. However, the passage of time and the ravages of history have left the Chateau in a state of delapidation. The photograph, taken circa 1922, showcases the majestic yet crumbling towers, a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural exchange that once took place between the Ottoman Empire and Europe. Max Fruchtermann, a renowned Turkish-Jewish photographer, captured this image, adding to his extensive collection of historical photographs of Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire.
