EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the somber atmosphere of the Memorial for the Victims of the Black Hole of Calcutta, located in the heart of India's historic city, Calcutta (now Kolkata). The memorial, erected in 1910, stands as a testament to one of the most infamous episodes in the city's rich and complex history. The Black Hole of Calcutta was a small dungeon cell in Fort William, a British fortress, where an estimated 146 British soldiers and European civilians were imprisoned on August 20, 1756. The prisoners were left without food or water for several days, and it is believed that only 23 survived the ordeal. The tragic event fueled anti-British sentiment and contributed to the outbreak of the Seven Years' War in India. The memorial, designed by British architect William Emerson, is an obelisk made of white marble, standing approximately 10 meters tall. It is adorned with intricate carvings and inscriptions, including the inscription at its base that reads, "To the memory of the 146 British prisoners who were suffocated in the Black Hole of Calcutta on the 20th of August 1756." The memorial is a significant historical site, attracting visitors from around the world who come to pay their respects and learn about the dark chapter in Calcutta's history. The image of the memorial, with its solemn and reflective atmosphere, serves as a poignant reminder of the past and the enduring power of history to shape our understanding of the world around us.
