EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intriguing reptiles: the House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus) and the Broad-tailed Gecko (Phyllurus platurus). The illustration, which is part of Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, was created by the skilled artist Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who was renowned for his work as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The House Gecko, depicted on the left, is a common reptile found in various parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. With its distinctive brown and tan coloration, this gecko is well-camouflaged against the walls and floors of buildings, making it an expert at blending in with its surroundings. The broad, flat tail of the Broad-tailed Gecko, shown on the right, is a striking contrast to the House Gecko's slender body. Native to Madagascar, this gecko is known for its unique ability to drop its tail when threatened, which can distract predators and allow the gecko to escape. The intricate details of this engraving, expertly executed by Massard under the direction of Turpin, showcase the beauty and diversity of these fascinating creatures. The use of handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a captivating addition to any natural history collection.
