EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a pivotal moment in the mythological tale of Hermes, the swift-footed Greek god of trade, thieves, travelers, and messages, and Herse, the beautiful daughter of Cecrops, the legendary first king of Athens. According to ancient Greek mythology, Hermes fell deeply in love with Herse and, in an attempt to win her heart, he enlisted the help of her sister Aglaura. Hermes' amorous intentions, however, were not pure. In a cunning move, he promised Aglaura that he would make her the queen of the gods if she helped him seduce Herse. Aglaura, blinded by greed and desire for power, agreed to Hermes' proposal. The scene captured in this print shows Hermes, dressed in his winged sandals and holding his caduceus, the symbol of his divine power, as he approaches Herse, who is shown sitting on a rock, surrounded by the lush greenery of the Athenian countryside. Aglaura, standing behind Hermes, smirks as she watches the scene unfold, seemingly pleased with her role in the deception. The historical and classical significance of this myth is rooted in the complexities of human emotions and desires. Hermes' infatuation with Herse and his willingness to use deceit and manipulation to win her heart reflects the intricacies of love and the lengths people will go to in pursuit of it. The involvement of Aglaura, who betrays her own sister for personal gain, highlights the destructive power of jealousy and ambition. This print, with its rich details and evocative imagery, invites us to explore the depths of human emotions and the timeless stories that have shaped our collective cultural heritage.
