EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith, was captured in December 1915 during a pivotal moment in his illustrious political career. Asquith, born on September 12, 1852, began his political journey as a barrister, earning a reputation as a skilled QC before entering parliament as the Liberal MP for East Fife in 1886. In 1908, he became Home Secretary, and later served as the Liberal Party leader from 1908 to 1916. In January 1908, Asquith was appointed as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, a position he held until May 1916. During his tenure, he oversaw significant political and social reforms, including the introduction of old-age pensions, the creation of the National Insurance Act, and the extension of the franchise to some women. Asquith's leadership during World War I is also noteworthy. He played a crucial role in managing the war effort and maintaining morale during the difficult early years of the conflict. However, his handling of the Gallipoli campaign and the resulting political fallout led to his resignation as Prime Minister in May 1916. Despite his resignation, Asquith remained an influential figure in British politics. He was created Earl of Oxford and Asquith in 1925, and continued to serve as a Liberal MP for Paisley until his death on February 13, 1928. This image, taken in 1915, captures Asquith at the height of his political power and influence, a testament to his enduring legacy as one of the most important political figures of his time.
