Marsoulan joined the French military in 1858, at the tender age of 19, and quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional leadership skills and strategic acumen. He served in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and the Indochina War (1883-1886), where he demonstrated his bravery and tactical prowess. In 1894, Marsoulan was appointed as the commander of the 2nd Colonial Infantry Battalion in Madagascar, where he played a crucial role in suppressing the Madagascar Revolt. His leadership during this period earned him the nickname "The Lion of Madagascar." Later in his career, Marsoulan served as the military governor of Tunisia (1902-1903), where he implemented various reforms to modernize the Tunisian military and improve the living conditions of the local population.
