This evocative image captures Sir Henry Morgan (1635-1688), the legendary Welsh buccaneer who rose to prominence in the English service during the latter half of the 17th century. Morgan, dressed in the finery of a Cavalier, proudly carries a bow and quiver, emblematic of his dual role as a military commander and a hunter. The sash adorning his waist bears the insignia of Charles II, the monarch who favored Morgan and appointed him Governor of Jamaica in 1674. Born in Wales, Morgan gained notoriety for his daring raids on Spanish settlements in the Caribbean. His exploits began in 1653 when he joined the English privateer fleet, preying on Spanish galleons laden with treasure. Morgan's successes against the Spanish earned him a pardon from Oliver Cromwell's regime, which had previously been hostile to buccaneers. Under Charles II, Morgan's fortunes improved significantly. He was knighted in 1661 and continued to lead successful raids against Spanish targets. Morgan's most famous exploit was the capture of Portobelo, Panama, in 1671, which yielded an estimated £1 million in treasure. Morgan's appointment as Governor of Jamaica in 1674 marked the beginning of his transition from pirate to legitimate colonial administrator. He oversaw the development of the island's economy and infrastructure, establishing sugar plantations and fortifying settlements. Despite his past as a buccaneer, Morgan's governorship was marked by relative peace and prosperity.
