EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the elegance and grace of Haruku, the Empress of Japan, also known as Empress Shoken, during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Haruku was the wife of Emperor Mutsuhito, who reigned from 1867 until his death in 1912. The image shows Haruku in Western-style attire, adorned with a beautiful lace neckpiece and a magnificent tiara, which added to her regal presence. The fan she holds in her hand is a subtle yet elegant accessory, often used as a symbol of refinement and status in Japanese culture. Haruku was born in 1848 as a commoner named Masako Takeda. She was selected as a consort for Emperor Mutsuhito in 1865, and later became the Empress in 1867. During her time as Empress, she played an essential role in promoting Westernization in Japan, particularly in the areas of education, art, and fashion. Her influence can be seen in the adoption of Western-style clothing and the establishment of schools for girls. The photograph is believed to have been taken around 1850, making it an invaluable historical record of the Empress's appearance and the fashion trends of the time. The image not only showcases Haruku's beauty and elegance but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of Japan during the Meiji period. The Western-style clothing worn by the Empress reflects the country's increasing interaction with the Western world and its influence on Japanese culture. Overall, this photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Haruku as a trailblazing figure in Japanese history.
