EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Guitarfish, scientifically known as Rhinobatos typus, also referred to as the Shovelnose Guitarfish. The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The artwork was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The Guitarfish is a unique and intriguing marine fish, characterized by its elongated, flat body shape, resembling a guitar. Its snout is broad and flat, resembling a shovel, which is where it derives its common name, Shovelnose Guitarfish. This fish is native to the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and is known to inhabit shallow waters. The creation of this illustration was a complex process, involving multiple steps. First, Pretre painted the original artwork. Then, the engraving was done by Massard, with guidance from Turpin. The final product was then handcolored, adding vibrant hues to bring the fish to life. The intricate details and lifelike colors make this a stunning example of the natural history illustrations of the time. This beautiful piece not only showcases the natural history of the Guitarfish but also highlights the artistic skill and dedication of the naturalists and artists of the past. The intricate details and vibrant colors make this a true masterpiece, worthy of display in any natural history collection or museum.
