EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative group photograph, taken on 24 January 1919, in Sudan, the Governor General of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, Sir Lee Oliver Fitzmaurice Stack (1868-1924), is seen with his staff, including the Sirdar of the Egyptian Army, in the midst of a sun-soaked landscape. The men, dressed in their formal military uniforms, stand at attention, while the women, dressed in elegant gowns and hats, hold parasols to shield themselves from the intense Middle Eastern sun. Sir Lee Oliver Fitzmaurice Stack, a British officer with a distinguished military career, is third from the left in the front row. Tragically, he would be assassinated while driving through Cairo on 19 November 1924. This photograph offers a glimpse into the colonial administration of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan during a pivotal period in its history. The British Empire's presence in the region was a complex and often contentious one, with tensions between the colonial powers and the local Arab and Sudanese populations. This image captures the formal hierarchy of the colonial administration, with the Governor General and his staff standing resolute amidst the desert landscape. The use of umbrellas and canes adds to the sense of formality and the contrast between the European colonial powers and the local population. This photograph is an intriguing window into a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the people and events that shaped the history of Sudan and the Middle East during the early 20th century.
