EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures Grand Princess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia (1853-1920), the only daughter of Tsar Alexander II, in her Russian court dress. Maria, who was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, would go on to make history when she married Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on July 23, 1874. The royal couple's union marked the first time a Russian grand duchess married a British prince. Maria's elegant appearance in this image reflects the opulence and grandeur of the Russian imperial court. Her intricately designed dress, adorned with gold embroidery and diamonds, is a testament to the wealth and power of the Romanov dynasty. The princess's regal bearing and serene expression convey a sense of confidence and poise, reflecting her status as a member of the imperial family. Maria and Alfred's marriage produced six children, including Queen Marie of Romania, who would go on to rule the country from 1922 to 1938. The couple's union also strengthened the relationship between Russia and Great Britain, as Maria's brother, Tsar Alexander III, and Queen Victoria were first cousins. This photograph, taken in the late 1870s, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played an important role in both Russian and British history. Maria's legacy as a mother to a reigning monarch and her role as a bridge between two powerful European dynasties continues to resonate, making this image a valuable historical artifact.
