EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Georg Schroder (also known as Schroeder), a renowned German educator born around 1584. Schroder's exact birthdate is uncertain, but his significant contributions to education in the 17th century have left an indelible mark on German educational history. Schroder was born in the city of Lübeck, located in the northern part of Germany. He studied theology at the University of Rostock and later became a professor of rhetoric and poetry at the University of Greifswald. Schroder's innovative teaching methods and commitment to the education of the common man set him apart from his contemporaries. He believed that every child deserved a quality education, regardless of their social status or financial means. In 1618, Schroder founded the first free school in Lübeck, which provided education to underprivileged children. The school was a resounding success, and Schroder's teaching methods were soon adopted by other schools throughout Germany. He also wrote several educational texts, including a popular grammar book that was used in schools for over a century. Despite his many accomplishments, Schroder's life was not without challenges. During the Thirty Years' War, which ravaged Europe from 1618 to 1648, Lübeck was occupied by Swedish forces. Schroder continued to teach and provide for his students during this turbulent time, even as the city around him was in chaos. This portrait, likely painted in the early 17th century, captures the wisdom and dedication of a man who devoted his life to the education of future generations. Georg Schroder's legacy continues to inspire educators and students alike, reminding us of the power of knowledge and the importance of providing equal opportunities for all.
