This photograph captures the stern and resolute visage of General Joseph Jacques Cesaire Joffre, a pivotal figure in World War One history. Born on January 12, 1852, in Cavaillon, France, Joffre rose through the ranks of the French military to become the Commander-in-Chief of the French and Allied armies during the Great War. Joffre's military career began in 1872 when he joined the French Army as a second lieutenant. He distinguished himself in the Franco-Prussian War and later served in Indochina and Madagascar. However, it was his strategic brilliance during the early years of World War One that earned him international acclaim. In September 1911, Joffre was appointed as the Chief of the General Staff, a position he held until the outbreak of war in 1914. When war broke out, Joffre was quick to mobilize the French forces and launch a series of offensives against the Germans. His most notable victory came in the Battle of the Marne in September 1914, which effectively halted the German advance on Paris and marked a turning point in the war.
