EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the iconic figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian patriot and military leader who played a pivotal role in the Italian Unification movement in the mid-19th century. The photograph, taken in 1882, shows Garibaldi in his later years, with a stern expression and piercing gaze. He is dressed in his signature red shirt, a symbol of the volunteer soldiers, or the "Thousand," who followed him in his campaigns for Italian independence. Born in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, in 1807, Garibaldi spent much of his early life at sea as a sailor. However, his political beliefs and desire for Italian unity led him to join various revolutionary movements throughout Europe. In 1834, he participated in the Sicilian Revolution and was exiled to South America, where he led the Uruguayan army to victory against the Brazilian Empire. Upon his return to Europe in 1860, Garibaldi led the Expedition of the Thousand, a volunteer army that aimed to conquer the southern Italian kingdoms and unite them with the northern states. The campaign was a success, and Garibaldi's troops captured Naples and Sicily, paving the way for the Italian Unification. Despite his military victories, Garibaldi's political ambitions were not fully realized, and he was eventually exiled from Italy. He spent his final years in Caprera, a small island off the coast of Sardinia, where he continued to write and advocate for Italian independence. This photograph, taken over two decades after Garibaldi's most famous campaigns, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of this Italian patriot and military leader. The image, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, is a valuable historical document that captures the essence of a man who dedicated his life to the cause of Italian unification and freedom.
