The struggle between France and the Netherlands, which had been simmering for years over trade disputes and territorial ambitions, had reached a boiling point in the spring of 1672. The French army, numbering over 80,000 men, crossed the Rhine on June 3, 1672, marking the beginning of a long and bloody campaign.
