EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Francis Drake: The English Admiral and Circumnavigator of the World (1545-1596) This striking image captures the legendary figure of Sir Francis Drake, an English admiral and explorer, best known for being the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe. Born in 1545 in Crowndall, Devon, England, Drake's seafaring career began in the Merchant Navy, where he gained valuable experience and skills. In this portrait, Drake is depicted in the prime of his life, wearing a richly decorated doublet, a fur-trimmed cloak, and a high-collared ruff. His thick beard and piercing gaze convey a sense of authority and determination. In his right hand, he holds a sword, symbolizing his military prowess, while in his left, he points to a globe, representing his achievements as a circumnavigator. A map lies at his feet, emphasizing his role in the exploration and mapping of new territories. Drake's circumnavigation of the world, which took place between 1577 and 1580, was a remarkable feat of seamanship and exploration. He set sail from Plymouth, England, with five ships and a crew of around 170 men. After rounding the southern tip of South America, they sailed across the Pacific Ocean, reaching the Philippines and Japan before crossing the Indian Ocean and returning to England via the Atlantic. Despite his many accomplishments, Drake's career was not without controversy. He was a privateer, authorized by the English crown to attack Spanish ships and seize their treasure. His raids on Spanish colonies in the Americas brought him great wealth but also made him many enemies. He died in 1596, during a skirmish with the Spanish off the coast of Portobelo, Panama. This image of Sir Francis Drake is a testament to his enduring legacy as an explorer, a military leader, and a symbol of English maritime power in the late 16th century.
