EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment when the British flag was hoisted at Taipo in the Kowloon hinterland of Hong Kong on April 29, 1899. The event marked the extension of British control over the New Territories, an expansion of the Hong Kong colony that doubled its size. The New Territories, located north of Kowloon Peninsula and south of the Shenzhen River, were leased from China for a period of 99 years under the Treaty of Shimonoseki, which ended the First Sino-Japanese War. The scene in the photograph is set against the backdrop of the rugged terrain and lush greenery of the Kowloon hinterland. A large crowd of British officials, soldiers, and local residents have gathered to witness the ceremony, which took place at a site overlooking the Taipo River. The British flag, held aloft by a group of soldiers, flutters in the wind as the crowd cheers and applauds. The hoisting of the British flag at Taipo was a significant milestone in the history of Hong Kong and China. It marked the beginning of a new era of British influence in the region and set the stage for the rapid development of Hong Kong into a major global trading hub. The event also highlighted the complex geopolitical dynamics of late 19th century Asia, as China struggled to maintain its sovereignty in the face of encroaching foreign powers. This photograph is a precious reminder of a pivotal moment in Asian history and offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was being reshaped by colonialism and imperialism.
