EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Sir Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett, an American-British statesman and prolific writer, in the prime of his career. Born on March 10, 1849, in New York City, Ashmead-Bartlett spent much of his life straddling the Atlantic, making significant contributions to both American and British society. Ashmead-Bartlett's literary prowess began to emerge in his youth, and he published his first book, "A Year in the French Riviera," in 1877. He continued to write extensively on travel, politics, and literature, earning a reputation as a gifted and insightful observer. However, it was Ashmead-Bartlett's political career that would ultimately define his legacy. He became a naturalized British subject in 1883 and was appointed as the British vice-consul in New York City in 1885. In 1886, he was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Bradford, representing the United Kingdom in the House of Commons. He served in various government positions, including as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies and as the British High Commissioner in South Africa. Despite his political successes, Ashmead-Bartlett remained deeply committed to writing. He continued to publish books and articles, and his work was widely read on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1901, he was knighted by King Edward VII for his services to literature and diplomacy. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures Ashmead-Bartlett in the midst of his remarkable career. With a thoughtful expression and well-groomed appearance, he exudes the intelligence and sophistication that made him a respected figure in both literary and political circles. The photograph is a testament to his enduring influence and the breadth of his accomplishments.
