EDITORS COMMENTS
Elisabeth of Wied (1843-1916), also known by her literary name Carmen Sylva, was a German princess who became the Queen Consort of Romania as the wife of King Carol I of Romania. Born into the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen-Wied, a cadet branch of the Hohenzollern dynasty, Elisabeth was the daughter of Prince Wilhelm of Wied-Neuwied and Princess Pauline of Württemberg. This portrait of Elisabeth, taken in the late 19th century, showcases the queen consort in her regal attire, adorned with a magnificent necklace and a diadem in the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen's colors. Her striking features, piercing gaze, and elegant posture exude an air of confidence and sophistication, reflecting her strong character and intelligence. Elisabeth, who was known for her literary pursuits and philanthropic endeavors, played a significant role in Romanian history. She was a patron of the arts and education, and she founded several institutions, including the National Theater in Bucharest and the first Romanian school for the deaf and mute. Her influence extended beyond Romania, as she was also a close friend and confidante of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissi. This engraving, which captures the essence of Elisabeth's regal presence, is a testament to her enduring legacy as a remarkable queen consort and a visionary leader. Her life and achievements continue to inspire and captivate historians, scholars, and admirers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
