EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, we see the enigmatic figure of Eleonore Zugun, a Romanian peasant girl who became the subject of intense fascination and protection due to her unexplained stigmata. The image captures Eleonore in a mental institution, her expression a mix of sadness and resignation. Born in the late 19th century in the rural villages of Romania, Eleonore's life took an extraordinary turn when she began to manifest signs of stigmata - the mysterious appearance of wounds on her body that corresponded to the wounds of Christ. Her strange affliction drew the attention of the local community, who saw her as a holy figure and began to venerate her. However, Eleonore's experiences also attracted the attention of the authorities, who saw her as a threat to the established order. She was eventually taken into a mental institution, where she was subjected to harsh treatments and isolation. It was during this time that Countess Wassilo-Serecki, a Polish noblewoman and humanitarian, heard of Eleonore's plight. Moved by her story, the countess took it upon herself to protect and care for the young girl. She arranged for Eleonore to be released from the institution and brought her to her own estate, where she could live in safety and relative comfort. Under the countess's care, Eleonore's condition improved, and she was able to live out the rest of her days in peace. Her story became a source of inspiration for many, and she was remembered as a symbol of faith and resilience in the face of adversity. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the complexities of human experience, and the ways in which the lines between the sacred and the profane can blur. It also highlights the role of individuals like Countess Wassilo-Serecki, who used their power and resources to protect those who were marginalized and misunderstood by society.
