EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900), second son of Queen Victoria, in a moment of quiet contemplation as he writes at a desk in civilian clothes. The image, taken by the renowned photographic studio of Maull & Polytechnic in Edinburgh around the turn of the 20th century, offers a glimpse into the private life of this intriguing royal figure. Born on August 6, 1844, Alfred was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Though he was not in line for the throne, he played an important role in the royal family and served as the Duke of Edinburgh from 1857 until his death. In this photograph, Alfred is seen dressed in a suit, his buttonhole adorned with a flower, as he focuses intently on the task at hand. The sepia-toned print evokes the historical atmosphere of the time, transporting us back to the late Victorian era. The desk, with its intricate woodwork and well-worn surface, adds to the sense of authenticity and intimacy. The photograph is a testament to the Duke's dedication to his duties and responsibilities, as well as to his personal interests and pursuits. Alfred's life was marked by tragedy and triumph. He was a devoted husband to Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia and a loving father to their five children. However, he was also plagued by ill health and financial difficulties. This photograph, taken in the twilight of his life, offers a poignant reminder of the complexities and nuances of this fascinating historical figure.
