EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts a breathtaking scene of early British military aircraft soaring above the iconic prehistoric monument, Stonehenge, located in Wiltshire. The image captures the essence of a bygone era, as the roar of engines replaces the tranquility of the ancient stone circle. In the foreground of the image, a Bristol Boxkite Biplane takes center stage. This historic aircraft, with its distinctive biplane wings and wooden propeller, was one of the first military aircraft purchased by the British War Office in 1911. Four of these planes were acquired, with examples later being sold to Russia and Australia. The Boxkite Biplane was primarily used for training purposes, providing the foundational skills for a new generation of pilots in the burgeoning Royal Flying Corps, the precursor to the Royal Air Force. To the right of the Boxkite Biplane, another early military aircraft can be seen, a monoplane. Although its make and model are not discernible from this photograph, it serves as a testament to the rapid advancements in aviation technology during this period. The combination of these early military aircraft against the backdrop of Stonehenge creates a striking juxtaposition, highlighting the intersection of the ancient and the modern. The photograph was likely taken during military maneuvers on Salisbury Plain, a vast expanse of land that has been used for military training since the 16th century. The open space and favorable weather conditions made it an ideal location for early aviators to hone their skills and prepare for the challenges of the battlefield. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the early days of military aviation in Britain, a time of innovation, exploration, and transformation. It serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Stonehenge, which continues to captivate and inspire generations, even as the skies above it fill with the sounds and sights of modern aircraft.
