EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) is seen standing rigidly before the military tribunal during his re-trial at Rennes, France, in 1899. The Dreyfus Affair, a controversial and deeply divisive episode in French history, had begun in 1894 when Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French Army, was falsely accused of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island. The initial verdict was based on forged evidence, and the case quickly became a cause célèbre, with many prominent intellectuals and politicians rallying to Dreyfus's defense. In 1896, new evidence came to light, leading to a retrial, which is depicted in this image. The scene at Rennes was tense and dramatic. Thousands of people gathered outside the courthouse, with both supporters and detractors of Dreyfus making their voices heard. Inside, the military tribunal, presided over by General Ferrié, heard testimony from key witnesses and reviewed the evidence. Despite the mounting evidence of Dreyfus's innocence, the military remained unconvinced, and the outcome of the trial remained uncertain. The photograph captures the intense focus of the proceedings, with Dreyfus's expression betraying a mixture of determination and anxiety. The re-trial at Rennes marked a turning point in the Dreyfus Affair. Although Dreyfus was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to another ten years in prison, the affair had galvanized public opinion and led to significant reforms in the French military and justice systems. The image of Dreyfus standing before the tribunal at Rennes remains a powerful symbol of the struggle for justice and the enduring power of public opinion.
