This evocative photograph captures the tense atmosphere at the papal frontier of Maremmo in Italy during the autumn of 1867. The Defenders of Rome, a group of Bersaglieri in the papal service, are seen manning the fortifications, prepared for an expected attack by the forces of Giuseppe Garibaldi. Garibaldi, a legendary figure in Italian history, had been leading a campaign to unify Italy under a single government, and his troops were making their way north from the southern regions. The papal states, which included the city of Rome itself, were the last holdouts against the Italian unification movement. The Bersaglieri, an elite infantry corps known for their marksmanship and mobility, were a key part of the papal defense forces. In this image, they are seen standing atop the walls, their rifles at the ready, scanning the horizon for any signs of the enemy. The autumn landscape, with its golden leaves and rolling hills, adds a sense of beauty and tranquility to the scene, but the soldiers' stern expressions and tense postures betray the seriousness of the situation.
